Nat Fisher, Bud Rothman and Albert Rothman selling unfinished furniture, providing quality serviceIn 1950, Nat Fisher, Bud Rothman, and Albert Rothman wanted to expand their furniture operation called Rothman Furniture. They heard about a new segment of the furniture industry that was beginning to blossom.

It was unpainted furniture, and it offered customers the ability to obtain handsome, quality home furnishings at very affordable prices. A bonus to unpainted furniture was that it offered an unlimited number of finishing options.

The decision was made to start a supplemental home furnishing showroom called Superior Unpainted Furniture. It was one of the first such showrooms in the nation devoted exclusively to unpainted furniture and it was a huge success. The motto was,”Its fun creative and economical to finish furniture from Superior”. It was so successful that it outlived Rothman Furniture by 45 years.

Of course, the unpainted furniture industry has changed over the years, as has Superior. “Unpainted furniture” came to be called “unfinished furniture”, and later, “ready to finish furniture”. An Unfinished furniture Association was started in the 1980’s and today UFA as it is called, is thriving as is the whole industry. (www.unfinishedfurniture.org )

Superior also grew with the times. Expanding to over 14,000 square feet of showroom in an old Neisner’s store at Ridge and Dewey, in Rochester, Superior Wood Furniture as it is now called, is one of the largest ready to finish furniture dealers in the northeast. Still family owned after 57 years, it is operated by Robin and Ken Fisher, Nat’s two children, and 3rd generation retailers.
